I’m sure we would all agree that 2020 was a hell of a year. Well, 2021 hasn’t started off that much better but at least we are now heading in the right direction.

Towards the end of a year writers/bloggers/publishers suggest a word to characterize the year. Arianna Huffington, CEO and founder of Thrive Global, defined it by the word ‘resilience’.

Resilience

Of all the different choices put forward, this one is my favourite because in order for us to survive and move forward we must be resilient. But what is resilience? The definition of resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. Not an easy stance to take though for many. If you research online ways to be resilient, lots of articles refer to exercising more, sleeping better, eating more healthily and general well-being type of scenarios. I can almost see you rolling your eyes!! We know what we should be doing.

For me, to be resilient is to be comfortable in your own being and happy with your own thoughts. Not everybody enjoys exercise and not everybody enjoys a salad, so to force or push forward those things that you are not comfortable with doesn’t necessarily feel full of positivity and if there is no positivity how can you begin to be resilient?

I try to live by a couple of maxims – my favourite, the one that has stuck with me for a long time – ‘choose your battles’. Nobody has the energy to fight every single fight successfully, so by choosing the ones that are most important to you, the ones that match your values, the ones that have the greatest positive impact on your life and focusing solely on them – you have a better chance of a win.

Having a focus is a great way to help you be resilient, even on the darkest of darkest days, knowing what you’re aiming for, what that end goal is, will keep you moving forward and will give you a sense of purpose and direction. Even if you only take small, baby steps towards it at least you are taking a step.

Over the last 12/18 months things have changed. This pandemic has altered our lives and our work, in ways that will never return. The most resilient businesses are the ones that know who they are, where they are going, have adapted and looked for new ways to work. They will take the best of what has had to change and bring it into business as a benefit.

So, embrace change, look for what has worked for you or for others. There may be changes that need to be made but you didn’t realise – until this pandemic came. The most important step is to take action. Where are you now? Regardless of where that is. Where do you want to be in six months, 1 year or even 2 years? What steps do you need to take to get there? Start picking away, day by day, week by week, at what you need to do to move your business forward and you will see progress and come out stronger.
